FIVE REASONS WHY IT IS IMPORTANT TO SUPPORT
FEDERALLY FUNDED FAMILY PLANNING
- Family
Planning Prevents Unintended Pregnancy and the Need for Abortion
While Americans overwhelmingly believe that abortion should be
legal, most also would prefer that fewer occur. The nation's
family planning effort dramatically reduces the need for abortion
by enabling thousands of women each year to avoid an unintended
pregnancy in the first place.
- Family Planning Saves Women's Lives
Many of the low-income women served by federal family planning
programs would otherwise go without potentially lifesaving exams
- including clinical breast exams, pelvic exams, and pap tests.
- Family Planning Improves Public Health
Family planning services provide confidential screening and treatment
for sexually transmitted infections such as chlamydia, gonorrhea
and HIV/AIDS. And studies show that pregnant women who visit
federally funded family planning clinics are much more likely
to obtain prenatal care, preventing the incidence of low birth
weight babies.
- Family Planning Encourages Personal Responsibility
Recently passed welfare legislation curtails public assistance
to unmarried women in an effort to reach two goals; promoting
marriage, and reducing the number of out-of-wedlock births. Federally
funded family planning has a proven track record in assisting
a large number of unmarried women to avoid unintended pregnancy.
- Family Planning Saves Taxpayers Money
Federally funded family planning programs more than make up their
cost to American taxpayers. Every $1 spent on family planning
saves an estimated $4 Medicaid costs for pregnancy related and
newborn care.
